You can create your family tree for free, but it costs money to access most of the existing online records. Lots of potential however the program crashes (in windows 7) every hour and now the windows-controls have disappeared and the window cannot be resized. In Windows my main program is Roots Magic which I have been using since it's original Family Origins day. I am very hopeful that Ancestry will invest more into programming for the FTM desktop programs. Switched from FTM in 2007 and glad I did. The navigation to and from other generations is simple, requiring only a click on the designated person. I started using GRAMPS about 5 years ago. Though, I have to admit the UI is not the prettiest one in the market of genealogy software, GRAMPS does its job of handling even huge databases of ancestors.

There should be a place for both. I do try to review others as they make major updates in case some "just gotta have" features comes along. Quit after I couldn't figure it out. I switched to RM from FTM2005. The biggest trouble is that Gramps (5.0.1-1) crashes at almost every session (I am using it in Windows, at the moment, adding people, notes and pictures) . I do not know anything in programing but I noticed the errors always come from some *.py and the last line in the error report is always "sqlite3.OperationalError: cannot start a transaction within a transaction". Started with MyHeritage - now in process of putting it all on Wiki Tree - also using Family Search but only for direct ancestors. Can be simplified?

I use Rootsmagic and have Legacy Family Tree on my computer because I had switched to RM several years ago. Very scattered.

I know some excellent researchers who keep their records in word processing software. Simply the best genealogy software. If I can get used to it, I will pursue it. Being able to store those notes on a cloud drive that I can access from any computer is enticing. I cannot find and install python2.7. Thank you very much! The program automatically eliminates or merges duplicates, which is very useful. I use Legacy. It is the best program to use if you have online trees there. FTM has had quite a few growing pains but the last few updates seem to have stabalized the program - there are still problems however. It is a big commitment on your part and oh, so helpful to all of us. I'm surprised RootsMagic didn't rank higher on this survey, given the number of people on Facebook and Google+ who have said they love RootsMagic. I use also Legacy Family Tree and sometimes Ancestris (no big problems with gedcom export / import with Gramps). This program can import data from other genealogy programs and GEDCOM files. Easy to update, easy to share with my interested relatives and nicely visual, since I have lots of photos and documents.
